The Highline Park - Information
The Highline Park is an elevated linear park located in Manhattan, New York City, built on a section of a disused New York Central Railroad spur, which runs from Gansevoort Street to West 34th Street, between 10th and 12th Avenues. The park spans for 1.45 miles and is elevated 30 feet above the streets. It is a popular tourist destination, featuring greenery, artwork, and stunning Hudson River views.
Originally built in the 1930s, the Highline was primarily used to transport goods and raw materials to factories and warehouses, but it fell into disuse in the 1980s. In 1999, a non-profit organization called Friends of the Highline was formed to advocate for the park's preservation, and after years of advocacy and fundraising, the park finally opened to the public in 2009. The park has been embraced by locals and tourists alike, drawing over 7 million visitors annually. The park has also been awarded numerous awards for its design and sustainability efforts.
