Kokkari is a beautiful coastal village located on the northeastern side of the island of Samos in Greece. The village is known for its stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and lively social scene. Kokkari means small, rocky place and is derived from the “Kokkos” (the round stone, that was used to grind olives).
Historically, Kokkari was a small fishing village and today, still maintains much of its traditional charm. The village was inhabited by refugees who came over to Samos Island after the Asia-minor catastrophe. Visiting the historic buildings in the area is a great opportunity to learn about the history of the village.
One popular attraction in Kokkari is the Church of St. Nicholas, which sits atop a hill overlooking the village and offers breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea. Another famous site is the ruins of the Temple of Hera, which dates back to the 6th century BC and is located only a few kilometers away.
In addition to the rich history and culture of Kokkari, the village is also known for its delicious seafood restaurants which serve the daily catch of the local fishermen. Visitors can enjoy fresh sea urchins, mussels, and other delicacies while sitting at the water's edge. Kokkari beach is one of the most popular beaches in Samos. However, there are many hidden coves and beaches along the coastline, which are ideal for those seeking a more secluded experience.
