Potos is a charming coastal town located on the southwest side of Thassos island, Greece. It is renowned for its crystal-clear waters, beaches and unique mixture of ancient and modern architecture. Historically Potos was known since the Bronze Age. The town was flourishing during the 19th century when the mining of marble was at its peak. The unique shade of the marbles found in Potos was called "Poteidaia Blue" and it was believed to be the most beautiful shade of blue in the world. The marbles from Potos were used in the construction of the luxury cruise ships, the American War Memorial in Greece, and even the White House in the USA.
The town has since evolved into a tourist destination with a modern infrastructure, hotels, restaurants, cafes offering the perfect holiday vibe. The beaches in Potos are particularly famous and have won several awards for being the cleanest in Europe. Besides the beaches, there are several landmarks, the oldest of which is the Monastery of Archangel Michael. It was built in the 19th century and is located at the top of the hill overlooking the town. Visitors can take a walk around the monastery, admire the views, and take a lot of pictures.
Apart from its historical landmarks, Potos is also interesting in culinary tourism and local wines. The area is known for its seafood restaurants offering delicious fresh catch of the day. Visitors can also indulge in some of the island's famous wines. The area is famous for "Rapsani" wine, which has a unique aroma and is considered one of the best Greek red wines.
