Almaty, the largest city in Kazakhstan and former capital of the country, is located in the southeastern part of the country at the foothills of the Trans-Ili Alatau mountains. The city became the capital of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic in 1929 and was known as Alma-Ata until 1997 when it was renamed Almaty.
