Salalah is a coastal city located in the southern part of Oman. Known as the “perfume capital” of the country, it is famous for its unique landscapes, frankincense trees, and its annual monsoon season that takes place between June and September, where it transforms from a dry desert to a lush green paradise.
The city is deeply rooted in history. The earliest known mention of Salalah is in the works of Arab geographer Ya'qubi, who noted it as a prosperous trading center in the 9th century. The city was an important stop on the ancient frankincense trade route that connected the Far East with the Mediterranean world. Visitors can explore the ancient ruins of Al Baleed Archaeological Park, an UNESCO Heritage Site, that showcases the city’s trading past. The park includes a museum with artifacts from ancient times and a replica of a traditional Omani market.
Despite its rich heritage, Salalah is a modern city with modern conveniences. It is home to many shopping malls, fine restaurants, and luxury hotels. Visitors can also enjoy recreational activities such as fishing, scuba diving, and boating. One of the city’s most popular attractions is the Al Mughsayl Beach and blowholes, located about 40 km west of Salalah. The beach is known for its white sandy shores, and the blowholes shoot up fountains of seawater as high as 50 meters.
