Cajamarca is a charming city located in the northern highlands of Peru. This captivating town is situated at an altitude of 2,750 meters (9,020 feet) above sea level and has a rich history that spans back thousands of years. The city was founded by the Inca Empire in the 13th century and was later conquered by the Spanish in 1532, during the reign of Emperor Atahualpa. Today, visitors can see a blend of both cultures, the Spanish colonial architecture, and the Inca ruins. One of the most popular tourist attractions in Cajamarca is the Baños del Inca, located just a few kilometers outside the city center. It is believed that the Inca Emperor Atahualpa used these hot springs for his own relaxation, and now visitors can take a dip in the same waters. Another historical site to visit in Cajamarca is the Ransom Room, which is where Atahualpa was held captive and later killed by the Spanish conquistador, Francisco Pizarro. In addition to its fascinating history, Cajamarca is also known for its delicious cuisine. One iconic dish that originated from the region is called "Chapana," a type of tamale made with corn, meat, and spices. The city is also home to several festivals throughout the year, including the Carnaval Cajamarquino, a lively celebration featuring traditional costumes, music, and dance.
