Upington is known as the economic hub of the Northern Cape province in South Africa. Founded in 1873, the city is located on the Orange River and has a population of over 75,000 people. Upington has a rich history, dating back to the San and Khoi people who lived in the area over 2,000 years ago. The city was named after Sir Thomas Upington, who was the first Attorney General of the Cape Colony. One of the main attractions in Upington is the Orange River Wine Cellars, which is the largest wine co-operative in South Africa. Visitors can take a tour of the cellar and taste some of the award-winning wines produced in the region. The Kalahari-Oranje Museum is another interesting place to visit, showcasing the history and culture of the local people. For nature lovers, the Augrabies Falls National Park is a must-see, with stunning waterfalls and breathtaking views of the canyon. In addition, Upington is also famous for its hot and arid climate, with temperatures often reaching over 40 degrees Celsius in the summer months. The city also has a unique airport, one of the longest in the Southern Hemisphere, with a runway stretching over 4 kilometers. The airport was built during World War II for the British Royal Air Force and was used as a stopover point during the war.
