Monterey - Information
Monterey, located on the central coastline of California, is a charming seaside town known for its beautiful beaches, historic landmarks, and vibrant marine life. It was originally inhabited by Native American tribes but became a Spanish colony in the late 1700s. The city served as California's capital under both Spanish and Mexican rule.
One of the most famous attractions in Monterey is Cannery Row, which was once home to a thriving sardine canning industry. The street was immortalized in John Steinbeck's novel of the same name and today, it is a popular tourist destination with restaurants, shops, and museums lining the street. Another renowned attraction is the Monterey Bay Aquarium, which features over 600 species of marine life, including jellyfish, penguins, and sea otters. The aquarium also conducts research on ocean conservation and sustainability.
History buffs will enjoy visiting the Custom House, California's first government building, which was built in 1827 by a Spanish military officer.
