St. Augustine is a city located in northeastern Florida, United States. It is considered to be the country's oldest continuously inhabited European settlement, having been founded by the Spanish explorer, Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, in 1565. St. Augustine's long history is evident in its architecture, with many historic buildings, churches, and fortifications still standing today. One of the most popular attractions is the Castillo de San Marcos, a fortress built by the Spanish in the 17th century. The fort was designed to protect the city from pirate attacks and is made of coquina, a type of limestone found in the area that also happens to be an excellent building material.
The Lightner Museum features a collection of art, antiques, and curiosities from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including Tiffany stained glass and Victorian curiosities. For those interested in religious history, the Mission of Nombre de Dios is a fascinating site. It was the location where the first Catholic Mass was celebrated in what is now the United States, and visitors can see the large cross that commemorates this event. St. Augustine also has a reputation as a haunted city, with many ghost tours offered throughout the year. One of the most famous haunted sites is the St. Augustine Lighthouse, which is said to be haunted by the ghosts of former lighthouse keepers.
