Gullfoss Waterfall is one of Iceland's most iconic attractions, situated in the canyon of the Hvítá river in southwest Iceland. It cascades down in two stages, dropping a total of 32 meters into a narrow crevice. Its name means 'Golden Falls' in English, and comes from the golden-hued spray that rises from the waterfall on sunny days. Gullfoss Waterfall is unique because it is divided into two tiers that are perpendicular to each other, with the upper tier dropping 11 meters and the lower tier dropping 21 meters. The tremendous amount of water that flows over the falls each year makes it a popular attraction for tourists visiting the area.

Gullfoss Waterfall has some intriguing historical facts attached to it. In the early 20th century, the waterfall was at risk of being dammed for hydroelectric power. However, the owner of the land and her adopted son fought against these plans to keep the beautiful natural features of the area intact. Their efforts were successful and today, Gullfoss Waterfall remains an untouched natural wonder that attracts thousands of visitors each year. Aside from appreciating the natural splendor, visitors to Gullfoss Waterfall can also explore the nearby geothermal area of Geysir and the historic Thingvellir National Park, which are both a short drive away.
